Team Unicorn's G33k & G4M3R Girls Video

This video makes me want to squeal with delight! Go Team Unicorn! (and yay to 2 posts in 2 days that involve Unicorns :P)
A lot of parodies seem to have recently sprung up from Katy Perry's California Gurls. Most of them have been really bad, but this one seems to be the exception to that rule. I actually think that I like this version of it better than the original and end up with these lyrics stuck in my head.

“G33k & G4M3R Girls”
Greetings friends….
Don’t you want to meet a nice girl?

(First verse)

I, know a place
Where the gamer scores are so extreme (bloop boop boop!)

Game over.

Now I'm not a California Girl and probably never will be, but these are lyrics that I can get behind. I love the Rand al'Thor, Sailor Moon, BSG, Robot Chicken and Han shot first references, not to mention the cameos by Stan Lee, Katee Sackhoff and of course one of my favorite geek crushes, Seth Green. *swoon*

Isn't he adorable? Lucky Clair Grant....

Anyway, Bonnie Burton over at The Official Star Wars Blog had the chance to interview these lovely ladies. Here's what they had to say about the concept and making of this little video

Words: Bonnie Burton

Move over fellas, the geek gals & gamer girls are in the house! The ladies of the award-winning Star Wars fan film Saber are back with a few of their friends including actor Seth Green, comics legend Stan Lee and Starbuck herself Katee Sackhoff — in a music video to celebrate geek girls everywhere.

“G33k & G4M3R Girls” — sung to the same tune as the hit song “California Girls” by Katy Perry — features Team Unicorn which includes actresses Michele Boyd (The Guild, How I Met Your Mother, Cold Case, Sons of Anarchy), Clare Grant (Walk the Line, $5 Cover, Black Snake Moan, Saber), Milynn Sarley (EA, TheGamerChick, LTA, Street Fighter High School), Rileah Vanderbilt (Hatchet, Frozen, Saber), and actor Seth Green (Robot Chicken, Family Guy) remind us all why geek girls rule!

There’s plenty of shout outs to Star Wars, Doctor Who, Marvel comics, Halo and more!

StarWars.com chats with the ladies of Team Unicorn (they answer as a single unit cause that’s how they roll) about their awesome music tribute to geek goddesses everywhere!

(Milynn Sarley as Psylocke, Clare Grant as Lara Croft, Rileah Vanderbilt as The Baroness and Michele Boyd as Han Solo)

Why did you decide to do such an awesome remake of Katy Perry’s song “California Girls” but as “Geeks and Gamers?”

We’d all become friends because of our shared love for geeky stuff and bonded even more cosplaying as Sailor Scouts during Comic-Con this year. Milynn, Rileah and Michele actually all play in the same guild in World of Warcraft!

Milynn and Michele were on the way back from the beach when they started singing along to the Katy Perry song and had the idea for the parody! We all know geekery the best, so it seemed a natural idea for the new version. They started coming up with lyrics in the car and then got Rileah and Clare involved, and it all snowballed from there!

Why the name “Team Unicorn?”

Because like unicorns, geek girls are not supposed to exist!

Everything from video games to comics is represented in the video! What was your favorite geekiest part of the video?

Michele: Oh god, there were so many. I think mine was when I was lamenting to the 501st Legion guys that I didn’t have a proper gun for my Han Solo outfit and they very nicely offered their authentic Star Wars blaster to me. I can’t remember what my reply was exactly because my brain was exploding.

Milynn: I love a good nerd dancing!

Clare: I love the line that shouts out my favorite book series, The Wheel of Time in the line “Where Rand Al’Thor still reigns supreme.”

Rileah: I love the references and sound effects of my favorite FPS game, HALO. More girls need to start kicking @$$ & taking names!

What’s your favorite Star Wars part of the video?

We adored the 501st and Rebel Legion coming out to represent and being so cool about us dorking out with their lightsabers and amazing costumes!!

How did ya get Stan Lee and Katee Sackhoff involved? They looked like they were having a blast!

We were already friends with Stan and Katee, so we just called them and told them what we were doing and they were both thrilled to be a part of it! The fangirls in us were more than ecstatic to have them.

Who wrote the lyrics? Was it a group effort?

Milynn and Michele came up with the initial concept and lyrics and then we all collaborated together to tweak them for maximum geekiness.

It was actually really difficult; there were so many different aspects of geek culture that we wanted to pay homage to and were trying to fit into one song! Can you catch all the different references?

Seth Green is one heck of a rapper! Please tell us he raps about Star Wars in the shower!

If you do a YouTube search for Seth Green you will find him straight killing it karaoking several rap songs. He was an obvious choice for his role in our video.

How long did it take to shoot the video? Where did all the geeky toys and artifacts come from?

We got the original idea before Comic-Con, but quickly realized that if we wanted to do this right, we needed to spend some serious time on the pre-production and planning of it, which took about six weeks. After that it became more a manner of dealing with everyone’s busy schedules to get the time to shoot!

We recorded the song in six hours and shot 95% of the video in a single day! Most of the toys and games came straight from our homes and Golden Apple Comics was generous enough to let us borrow the large busts!

Why do you think it’s important that geek & gamer girls stand up and be proud of their geekiness?

Everyone is a geek about something, whether it be football, gaming, politics or comic books! It’s so amazing that girls are becoming more accepted and holding their own against a typically male-dominated field. Really, we’re all just enjoying expressing what we love so much, and we hope other girls feel the same!

Anything else ya wanna add?

Just a big thank you to our director, Dave Yarvo from Yarvo productions who made this possible, everyone involved, everyone who supports us, and unicorns all over the world.

This is truly a love letter to all things geek and we are so grateful to have been able to make our dream come true.

Go Geeky Girls! Thanks Ladies for representing us! You Rock!
