The New 52 - October Edition

October is the perfect month to sit outside and enjoy nature and read. Or sit inside and watch the rain and read. Or really do anything and read.

I'd like to say that I was just so busy this month that I didn't have a lot of time for reading, but the truth is I'm switching up my medication and it's making my wonky and that's making it very hard for me to concentrate, so sadly I haven't gotten nearly as much reading done this month as I would have liked.
Here is what I did manage to read this month;

by T.A. Pratt

321 Pages

The bad girl of the magical underworld is back and badder than ever
Someone wants Marla Mason dead. Usually that’s not news. As chief sorcerer of Felport, someone always wants her dead. But this time she’s the target of a renegade assassin who specializes in killing his victims over days, months, or even years. Not to mention a mysterious knife-wielding killer in black who pops up in the most unexpected places. To make matters worse, an inmate has broken out of the Blackwing Institute for criminally insane sorcerers—a troubled psychic who can literally reweave the fabric of reality to match her own traumatic past.
With her wisecracking partner Rondeau reluctantly in tow, Marla teams up with a “love-talker” whose dangerous erotic spells not even she can resist. Together they’re searching the rapidly transforming streets of Felport for a woman who’s become the Typhoid Mary of nightmares, infecting everything—and everyone—she touches with a chaos worse than death itself.

I'm constantly checking if any of my favorite authors have new books out. I was super excited to find out that T.A. Pratt has multiple new books out in this Marla Mason series (When I read them, they left off on a cliff hanger after book 4) So I decided to reread the series so I remember what's going on. This was always my favorite book of the series and it still holds up even when rereading it. I find it intriguing that such an innocent character that has something really, really terrible happen to her (%) becomes such an amazing force to be reckoned with. She is so powerful, but completely out of control. It makes her both the victim and partially the villain at the same time; as in the villain is a figment of her imagination that she has let loose on the World. It's a quite fascinating dynamic.
I enjoy that the author is very open with his characters, they are straight, gay, bi, magically attractive and it all blends into the plot without making gender or sexuality an issue.

by Robert Jordan

1011 Pages (41:32 Hours)

As the Wheel turns, the winds of fate roil across the land, and Rand al'Thor struggles to unite the nations for the Last Battle, when the Dark One will break free into the world, and to spring the snares laid by the immortal Forsaken for unwary humankind.
The White Tower in Tar Valon, under the Amyrlin Elaida, has decided that Rand must be controlled - gentled, if need be - immediately. And in Salidar, among the Aes Sedai in exile, Egwene al'Vere, although summoned to high office, faces the knowledge that her colleagues also wish to bind him.
Drought and summer heat linger into winter, and Nynaeve al'Maera and Elayne, the Daughter-Heir of Andor, begin a desperate search for the fabled ter'angreal that may enable them to bring normal weather - a search that takes them among Whitecloaks bent on exterminating Aes Sedai.
And across half a continent, Perrin Aybara feels Rand's pull, ta'veren to ta'veren, and for the first time in a thousand years the bowmen of the Two Rivers march to war.

Book 6 of Wheel of Time really starts to get into politics. At the worst of times, it can be pretty boring. Rand is trying to figure out how to run both Caemlyn and Cairhien, while trying to deal with the nobles of each country and also the Aes Sedai from both the White Tower and the Rebels of Salidar, who all want to manipulate him for their own purposes. This includes Egwene, who has been newly raised to Amyrlin Seat among the Rebel Aes Sedai.
Min, Elayne and Aviendha must start sorting out their feelings for Rand () and his for them. Min heads to Rand, while the other two head out on the long and boring quest to find the Bowl of Winds.
This book is huge and mostly boring, but has one of the best endings and one of my favorite covers. I always feel like I'm reading a Harlequin Romance and it makes me laugh.

Endsinger (The Lotus War #3)
by Jay Kristoff

404 Pages

A TREMBLING EARTH
The flames of civil war sweep across the Shima Imperium. With their plans to renew the Kazumitsu dynasty foiled, the Lotus Guild unleash their deadliest creation—a mechanical goliath known as the Earthcrusher, intended to unite the shattered Empire under a yoke of fear. With the Tiger Clan and their puppet Daimyo Hiro in tow, the Guild marches toward a battle for absolute dominion over the Isles.
A BROKEN REBELLION
Yukiko and Buruu are forced to take leadership of the Kagé rebellion, gathering new allies and old friends in an effort to unite the country against the chi-mongers. But the ghosts of Buruu’s past stand between them and the army they need, and Kin’s betrayal has destroyed all trust among their allies. When a new foe joins the war tearing the Imperium apart, it will be all the pair can do to muster the strength to fight, let alone win.
A FINAL BATTLE
The traitor Kin walks the halls of Guild power, his destiny only a bloody knife-stroke away. Hana and Yoshi struggle to find their place in a world now looking to them as heroes. Secret cabals within the Lotus Guild claw and struggle; one toward darkness, the other toward light. And as the earth splits asunder, as armies destroy each other for rule over an empire of lifeless ash and the final secret about blood lotus is revealed, the people of Shima will learn one last, horrifying truth.
There is nothing a mother won't do to keep her children by her side.

This is the 3rd and final book in this series and man was it a good one. All 3 books have been leading to this point of war, but I never thought that it would unfold as it did. The Kagé splits but they manage to find new allies who are also outraged at the desecration of their world and of the people that they loved (%) Everyone seems to find their own reasons to fight, even if it means leaving everyone they love or fighting against everything they've ever known.
Hana and Yoshi use their kenning to speak with the Thundertigers and Hana becomes, not only the next Stormdancer, but something else as well (¥)
I thought that this book was going to end about half way through and was happily surprised when they introduced an entirely new plot that had been just under the surface through all of the books, but never gotten into. It as amazing! This series is worth reading and I hope that the author decides to write more books in the future

Thursday Threads - Geek Jewelry

Geek clothes are awesome. I love posting about them and I''m constantly thrilled that more and more become available for women all the time. Because as we all know, women are geeks too. So it's really great that it's not just clothes that are now being marketed to women, but jewelry as well. Really, really kick-ass jewelry.

This post started really small with a few neat rings that I found and then totally spun out of control as I found so much more than I had even anticipated and I just had to keep adding more and more to this post. In the end, I ended up cutting some of it out, just to try and keep some control.

So here is some of the best of what I found and where you can get it
(just click on the company name)

When I found RING Jewelry, I fell in love! Just look at these amazing rings with Star Wars quotes spelled out in Aurebesh (the common language in Star Wars)

"He's no good to me dead"

"The Force is stronge with this one"

"These aren't the droids we're looking for"

"The Force will be with you, always"

"Do or do not. There is no try"

"I love you" & "I know"

"I love you" & "I know"
I really love the coloured Han and Leia ones! So awesome! And check out these amazing ring boxes

So it's not all Star Wars, they offer a great selection of other geek rings as well

I always hate when I find awesome stuff on Think Geek. It's such an amazing store, but the shipping to Canada is killer. So I guess I will just have to dream and hope that they will open a Canadian office one day. I mean, just look at this fun stuff!

These metal vials from the Mistborn Trilogy make me squeal with joy!

They even have the glyphs from the Stormlight Archive!

Gotta love Etsy! It's the perfect place to sell amazing geek jewelry. This is one of my favorite stores. I mean, just look at everything! There's something for everyone!

I love these tiara rings! They are so amazing!

This One Ring is pretty neat. You can either have it say it's original markings "Ash nazg thrakatulûk agh burzum-ishi krimpatul." Translated, the words mean: One ring to rule them all, one ring to find them, One ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them. OR you can have it say whatever you want written in Tengwar

Sonic Screwdrivers!!

Personalized in Aurebesh

So much R2-D2!!

Princess Leia's belt! Cloud City! Swoon!

These necklaces and rings have a beautiful framework that I really love

I am enamored with these beautiful book quote cuffs!

This is me. It has turned my brain, indeed

what perfect earrings! They sum it up nicely, don't they?

how cute are these Street Fighter earrings. They look great with both in one ear, but I think they would look pretty cool in both.

I do love Hot Topic with it's easy accessibility to geek culture. It may not be the highest quality stuff, but it's amazing and available and I think that's awesome!

These Disney branded rings are full of wonder! I really love them

These Mickey & Minnie and Donald & Daisy rings are both cute, weird and geeky

Shana Logic always has great stuff that keeps me coming back for more!
I'm on her mailing list and the emails are always adorable and quirky. Be sure to check out all of her other amazing , non-pop culture stuff

This Neverending Story Auryn necklace makes me giddy with joy!

I love that the doors to these little Hobbit holes open!

These rings are beautifully worked. I love all the little details

These rings are really great for engagement rings. Not only can you get matching rings, but most of them come as a wedding set with both engagement and wedding bands

Here are some more beautifully done rings that would be gorgeous on their own, but are made even better with a geeky flare. Most of these are special pieces that he has made for various couples

Not only does it look like Lightning's armor from XIII-3, but it has hidden cataurs inside!

I love these lightsaber rings!

What a gorgeous Chibi Moon ring in rose gold!

This strange piece has both the dragon from Dragonball Z and the Tri-force symbol! What a neat mix of pop culture for a very special girl!
